Hovatron - The R&B Remixes

Download: Hovatron - The R&B Remixes (.zip)
The first time I came across a Hovatron remix was back in the summer of ‘08, when the Patchwork Pirates dropped a promo mix, and for me, the stand-out track was Nas’ ‘I Made You Look’ (Hovatron Remix). It still sounds big, so check it out 25 minutes in. Full tracklist here.
Now, 18 months later, the wunderkind from Montreal returns with his take on 4 super-commercial R&B tunes of the last year. Having produced a late-night R&B show for a few months earlier this year, these tracks have scarred me, possibly for life. However, despite the nausea the acapellas induce, the flair with which Hovatron has gone about revamping these tracks is clear. His super-slick, synth-driven, wonky productions bang hard, and deviate from the predictable chord progressions of the originals, keeping things fresh.
His take on Rihanna’s ‘Rudeboy’, which was originally produced by Pendulum’s Rob Swire, is proper dope and definitely worth bagging. And the other cuts from Cassie and Janet Jackson might be your thing if you’re a fan of Hud Mo’s occasional R&B excursions. However, I suspect only the masochists amongst you will be able to stomach hearing Jeremih’s ‘Birthday Sex’ acapella again, which is a shame as the beat is tight.
