The guys over at the amazing Unlooped have outdone themselves with this one, a rework of Don’t Cry by J Dilla… featuring a string quartet! I’ve missed posting a lot of treats up this week seeing as I’ve been doing 14 hour days at a new job and Rich is AWOL still, but this one just had to get posted up.
The track is part of “Versus” Last year, a series where Unlooped gathers different Milwaukee artists together and take on and re-interpret a major, influential artist’s music catalog with an electronic twist. I’m seriously excited for what’s to come in the future.

They’ve decided to do one better and make them available for free! It’s free Dilla beats, if you need to hear more you can fuck right off! TURN IT UP!

Serato and Stones Throw have teamed with the J Dilla Estate for the official J Dilla Serato release, Donut Shop. This is 2 discs with six J Dilla tracks, 2 sides with Serato Control Tone (for use with Serato Scratch Live DJ software), and 2 donut slipmats in a package designed by Studio No.1. This will be released May 10th (the day after Mother’s day—what’s up Ma Dukes?). Pre-order is available now.
The J Dilla tracks consist of three previously unreleased instrumentals selected by J.Rocc from the Dilla archives – “Safety Dance”, “Sycamore”, “Bars & Twists” – and three unreleased instrumental versions of Dilla’s production for Mos Def, Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes, each remastered by Elysian Masters who mixed and mastered J Dilla’s Donuts, The Shining and Ruff Draft albums.

A fresh You Should Know for this weekend and it’s a classic for sure. We both went down and caught him at Plastic People last week, but I must say it was this release which first introduced me to Bullion. The release dropped online in 2007 and fuses The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds with J Dilla style beats and I could ramble on about how good it is for hours.. but I wont. Instead I suggest you just check it out and trust me on this one!

K15 - Remixes Vol.1
K15 just put out Remixes Vol.1 which contains a chilled soulful remix of Dabrye Feat Dilla and Phat Kat - Game Over and a remix of Radiohead’s Nude. The Radiohead remix is a bit hit and miss, same as most Radiohead remixes really, but this is well worth the download for the Dabrye remix which has a real nice Slum Villiage vibe about it.
